  • Managing conversations about elections and the media as a parent

Submitted by Rebecca Stanisic on 27 February 2025

Ontario is currently in an election campaign and the entire country will have a federal election at some point this year as well (the exact date is yet to be determined).  As a parent, elections pose a valuable time to have discussions with kids about the privilege of voting, the ways democracy works, how the Canadian government functions, how political advertising works, why sharing accurate info about politics matters and more.

  • I’m overwhelmed online. Now what?

Submitted by Rebecca Stanisic on 27 January 2025

I probably could, and maybe should, write about all of the social media changes we are seeing. The troubling updates to Meta’s content moderation policies and the removal of their fact-checking program, the complicated TikTok ban in the US, all of it.

  • Everything is a house hippo

Submitted by Rebecca Stanisic on 8 April 2024

Remember the house hippo? The beloved mini creature who lived in Canadian homes? Or at least, that’s what we were told years ago as part of a Concerned Children's Advertisers campaign to help kids think critically about what they were seeing on TV.

  • Being a positive digital citizen

Submitted by Rebecca Stanisic on 23 October 2023

Now is a good time to think about how we are creating, curating and engaging with online content.

Digital Citizen Day is October 25, 2023, and Media Literacy Week is October 23-27, 2023. MediaSmarts is focusing on spreading positivity online as a part of their campaign.

  • Fan Frenzy: Is technology helping or hindering?

Submitted by Rebecca Stanisic on 6 October 2023

So, parents, you may or may not have noticed that Taylor Swift has announced a tour that will in fact include six Toronto dates.

Ohhhh, you have noticed? Because you tried to get nearly impossible-to-get tickets like 38 million other people did?

    Yeah, you aren’t alone.

  • A parent’s view of Digital Citizen Day and Media Literacy Week

Submitted by Rebecca Stanisic on 24 October 2022

Parents, you may be aware that Media Literacy Week is October 24-28 and Digital Citizen Day is October 26, but we should talk about digital media literacy all year round. We are raising kids who are going to be so much better at using media for (hopefully) good; for their education, careers, community giving and passions. It’s moving quickly and we are trying to keep up.

  • Science evolves! And so does (and should) health policy and the scientific consensus

Submitted by MediaSmarts on 22 April 2022

Studies have shown that communicating the scientific consensus on a topic can be a helpful strategy in the fight against misinformation. For example, a 2015 study found that “emphasizing the medical consensus about (childhood) vaccine safety is likely to be an effective pro-vaccine message.”

  • Fighting misinformation: Why pausing before you share really works!

Submitted by MediaSmarts on 12 April 2022

Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more clear than ever that dealing with the misinformation surrounding COVID-19 requires us to come at it from every possible angle. We have needed trusted voices to provide strong, clear and sharable counter-messaging on social media.

  • Start media education early with TVOkids Original Wacky Media Songs

Submitted by Matthew Johnson on 4 April 2022

Parents could be forgiven for thinking that our children are born media literate. Kids take to digital devices like the proverbial ducks to water, quickly becoming expert at finding the videos and games they want, and it’s a rare baby shower that doesn’t feature Elsa or Elmo in one form or another.

  • Has the pandemic changed how we engage with media?

Submitted by Matthew Johnson on 25 October 2021

Matthew JohnsonThey say the future comes when you aren’t looking. This Media Literacy Week, we are reflecting on how the pandemic has changed how we interact with media and each other. Certainly a few years ago, not many of us could have imagined we’d be spending a fair portion of our lives doing video chats, which were considered obsolete and mostly reserved for keeping in touch with friends and family far away.
